Mathis, “XL” producer of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Furniture Technologies

Since 1809, Mathis has been a family business specializing in the design, manufacturing and construction of large-scale wooden buildings. A customer of the SCM group since 1993 with the 5-axis machining center "pmt" still in operation, Mathis has had to face numerous demands in recent years, even unusual ones.

Mathis represents more than two centuries of history, innovation and creativity. A very long journey which began in 1809 with the founding of the company by Jean Lugensland and then continued through several crucial stages. In 1880, he began his activity as a general contractor. In 1956, the carpentry activity was added, which then experienced notable growth in France. Since 1978, the Mathis company has opened up to exports. In 2000, the company developed the manufacturing and installation of wooden frames as well as the integration of a unit to produce its own metal fittings and connectors. Mathis certifies and labels its construction techniques in line with its constant concern for quality. Numerous advances which allowed it to win the “Company of the Year” award for its prosperous and dynamic activity.

Numerous investments will follow which will allow Mathis to become the French number one in wooden construction in 2012 and to become the European leader in office construction in 2019.

This successful journey is based on key investments such as those made with Italian woodworking technology manufacturer SCM. The partnership between Mathis and SCM began with the acquisition of « pmt », a gantry machining center for curved beams, and continued in a context of continuous growth, with the latest investment in a new center of « oikos xl », CNC machining, chosen for the possibility of processing sections up to 500x1250 mm. The quality and machining speed offered were also decisive points in the preference for this model, perfectly suited to the creation of elements for high-rise buildings. So many advantages which, combined with the automatic loading and processing of the six sides of the part without turning, convinced the customer to buy.

Faced with ever more ambitious sections and dimensions, the Mathis company has accompanied the explosion of wooden construction and has continued to push the technical limits in the creation of load-bearing structures for wooden buildings: some of them can even exceed 100 meters! One of the most difficult challenges was the series machining of large columns and beams with ever more complex machining and ever more demanding precision requirements. Old methods, particularly notching, are no longer sufficient when the mortises reach depths greater than one meter. Thus, the mechanical limits of tools, such as the chain mortiser, which cannot adapt to such demanding machining in the heart of the wood, have been overcome.

Mathis and its high-performance design office have been able to develop innovative machining strategies, but with programming times that are too long to cope with all the projects, in particular those of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which are characterized by criteria much more sustainable from a real estate and infrastructure point of view.

This is how the industrial expertise of SCM was combined with the skills of this major French manufacturer, giving life to a true transalpine partnership. A mutual exchange from which the Italian group also benefited by integrating the ideas and exceptional know-how of its customer in the development of its own Maestro Beam&Wall programming software.

A team effort which, with the new software, has allowed easier programming and management of solid wood sculptures and more difficult operations carried out using the blade and mortiser. Thanks to this partnership, the new software is now integrated into all SCM CNC machining centers for wood construction.

SCM governs its production through the internal development of its machines and software, which clearly makes it an exceptional partner for the sector.

Oikos product range

SCM has full control over its production, with in-house development of its machines and software, as well as their production. This clearly makes it an exceptional partner for industry.
